Signs of language fluency

Image
Learning a language is hard work and can take a long time, depending on the language and if it’s your first foreign language or sixth. Even harder is it to master it and become fluent. I still struggle sometimes with English which I started learning when I was 10 which is over 15 years ago. Anyhow, here are some points that show you how fluent you are in a language. I tried to put them in an order, so when you’re at the last point you can claim having mastered a language. I’m going ahead and skip that having a full conversation or reading a novel without having to check each word as, when you’re at this point, there’s still a long way to go. 1) understanding comedy Comedy is a complex thing as there are several kinds of comedy. One of my favorites are the ‘dad-jokes’ which is a formal kind of pun where you need to know the double meaning of the word creating the joke. I’m a big fan of comedy movies because, well, they make me laugh. I’ve spent hours watching

Reasons for traveling apart from traveling

There a millions of reason for why we leave home. And of course millions of reason to stay home. Apart from the most obvious one “I want to see the world and I want to meet new people/ places/ cultures/ etc.” This is just a little list of reasons for why I left home and why other people, that I met, left home: 1) To learn or practice a language When I left for Spain back in 2015 my main goal was to practice and improve my Spanish also to see how good I was and how much more effort I have to put in to be fluent. Pretty much everybody knows if you want to learn a language you have to spend some time in that country. You can read as many books and

Right after Christmas we left Mexico. The ride to Guatemala was somewhat ok. We were told it takes 8 hours. Yeah, fuck you 8 hours. It took fucking 15 hours. Can’t trust anyone these days. Anyhow, we landed in San Pedro La Laguna right at Lake Atitlán. The lake is actually quite beautiful. I didn’t go into the water though. Some say it’s really unhealthy, really dirty and there are fish inside. Yeah naah. The city itself is quite nice but so many hippies. Me didn’t like. Instead of passed out people on the streets you have meditating people. No respect for their surroundings. To be honest, we didn’t do a lot there. We met Jenny, a half German-half Chinese girl from Australia. She was quite funny and really beautiful. All together we were hiking to an infinity pool which wasn’t infinitive at all. You had to pay to go inside. Those fuckers. The way is the goal, I know, but not if you get lost 100 times on your way. I still enjoyed it. The last night in San Pedro was … intere
